Hier Kom Die Bokke!

I confess, I was a hot mess, a blubbering bundle of nerves as I decked out my apartment with South African memorabilia. Rainbow flags proudly danced in the windows as if they were sending signals to the rugby gods. I was teetering on the edge of tears even before the match had started! But why? What had me so emotionally invested in this game?

My (English!) husband gazed at me, a mixture of confusion and amusement in his eyes. I did my utmost to explain that South Africa's national rugby team, the Springboks, represented something much deeper that went beyond the realm of sports!

At that moment, the Springboks, led by Siya Kolisi, South Africa’s first black rugby captain, took to the field like mighty warriors, with a passion to succeed that was nothing short of awe-inspiring.

They faced countless challenges, obstacles that would have deterred most, but they pressed on.

Their determination was fierce because they knew precisely how much it meant to the people back home, and that knowledge was the fuel that ignited their spirits.

As the match unfolded, it became clear that the Springboks weren’t just playing for a trophy; they were playing for hope, for unity and for a brighter future for all South Africans. It was about a passion so deep that it could move mountains.

Their commitment, their resilience, and their unwavering spirit captured the hearts of millions, not just in South Africa but around the world.

It reminded me of Nelson Mandela, a true visionary who inspired an entire nation to change, not just for the good of a minority, but for the good of everyone!

He envisioned a nobler purpose for rugby that transcended the boundaries of sport; he saw rugby as a means to unite a nation torn apart by apartheid.

The 1995 Rugby World Cup win was when this vision began to take shape, marking a pivotal juncture in South Africa’s history.

The Springboks transformed into a beacon of hope and inspiration for all South Africans, when it was most needed; reminding us that, no matter the hurdles we face, we can rise above them by standing united.

Fast forward to the present day, and it’s no secret that South Africa continues to grapple with some of the most daunting challenges. Ongoing reports of corruption, government mismanagement, alarmingly high unemployment rates, and a concerning surge in crime cast shadows over our journey, all exacerbated by the far-reaching effects of the global

COVID-19 pandemic.

And here we are, amid these challenges - still standing, our spirit unbroken ❤️

The Springboks persevered, battling till the very last moment - for South Africa, for our rainbow nation and for the hope that their success can inspire others to believe in the power of dreams, against all odds! Afterall, it was their purpose, their driving force.

They showcased that when a group of individuals comes together with a shared purpose fuelled by their "why," they can surmount even the most daunting obstacles, a lesson we can all embrace.

In the end, as I wiped away my tears of joy, I realised that the Springboks’ journey painted a vivid picture of what it means to be South African.

Their historic fourth Rugby World Cup victory epitomised the extraordinary 'never-give-up' spirit that flows through the veins of every South African.

It signifies a nation that is standing firm, united, and brimming with love for its people, its land, and its future.
