Punta Cana

Punta Cana gave us two extremes …

On one side, there was that dreamy Caribbean magic — sun blazing, palms swaying, water so clear ... pure paradise.

And then… boom ..!!

The skies turned moody, the wind picked up, and suddenly we were smack bang in the middle of a tropical cyclone. Not my first (so I was calm-ish), but let’s just say a few tourists were on the verge of full-blown meltdown mode.

Sudden announcements blaring: “Take cover in your bathrooms!” and “Stay away from windows!”

While half the resort started packing like it was the apocalypse, the other half were still in the pool, cocktails in hand, laughing in the pouring rain like it was just another carefree Tuesday in the tropics – iconic …

We sat on our balcony, watching it all unfold. Sheets of rain, palm trees swaying like dancers in slow motion, lightning splitting the sky — and through it all, the music never stopped. The locals — with their huge hearts and effortless Caribbean grace — just smiled through the storm, unfazed and somehow still vibing?!

And when the sun finally reappeared? Oh, the resort came back to life like it had never even rained - laughter, bachata beats and an epic foam party on the beach!

With bottomless piña coladas, unlimited hot dogs, and more braai-style food than my heart could possibly handle — I was in my happy place.

Oliver knows the secret: keep me fed, keep the cocktails flowing, and voilà — one very content (and very quiet) Mel.

P.S. We also wandered along the shoreline, exploring local markets and chatting with vendors selling everything from hand-carved jewellery to handmade cigars. They definitely kept us on our toes — but we supported them anyway, because they’re out there hustling with heart, soul, and the brightest smiles. It reminded me so much of home — that same spirit of never giving up.
